3 Fellowships in Jewish Thought

Princeton University’s Tikvah Project on Jewish Thought and Program in Judaic Studies invite applications for three Tikvah Visiting Fellowships in Jewish Thought for the academic year 2009-2010. These fellowships are for outstanding scholars and teachers interested in devoting a year in residence at Princeton writing and teaching about Jewish Thought. The first Tikvah fellowship is for post-doctoral fellows, the second for research fellows, and the third for teaching fellows (all of which are detailed below).
Jewish Thought is defined here very broadly to include any relevant time period, figure, or topic. We aim to appoint fellows who are interested in grappling with the great human questions from a Jewish perspective and committed to bringing Jewish ideas and thinkers into conversation with the broader historical, philosophical, and theological traditions of the West and beyond. The fellows will be integrated fully into the Program in Judaic Studies as well as into any and all appropriate departments, programs, and centers at Princeton University.
The Tikvah Post-Doctoral Fellow(s) will pursue research half-time and teach one course of his/her design each semester. This is a one-year position with the possibility of renewal for up to three years. The stipend for 2009-10 will be approximately $69,500.
The Tikvah Research Fellow(s) will devote the major portion of his/her time to research and writing. Fellows normally receive stipends of up to one half of their academic year salaries. In general, we anticipate that a research fellow visiting from another university will come with sabbatical support from his/her home institution in order to maintain a full salary.
The Tikvah Teaching Fellow(s) will teach one course each term at Princeton, one of which may be a freshman seminar on Jewish thought and a broad humanistic theme, the other of which may be an undergraduate or graduate seminar taught or co-taught with an appropriate member of Princeton’s faculty in Judaic Studies. The Teaching Fellow will be offered a full salary.
Applying with a stated interest in one of the designated fellowships will not prejudice an applicant from being considered for another of the fellowships, if deemed appropriate.

Applicants will be evaluated in terms of: scholarly excellence, the potential of the proposed project to contribute to a broad understanding of Jewish thought, and the contribution their teaching might make to Princeton’s curriculum in Jewish thought.
How to apply:

Review of applications will begin on October 31, 2008 and will continue until the fellowships are filled. Applicants are asked to submit the following material:
1.	A letter of introduction
2.	A curriculum vitae
3.	For the Post-Doctoral Fellowship, three letters of reference
4.	For the Research and Teaching Fellowships, three names of potential references
5.	A statement (of 1000 words or less) describing the proposed research project
6.	A draft syllabus for a potential freshman seminar on Jewish Thought and a broad humanistic theme
7.	For the Research and Teaching Fellowships, a confidential statement that indicates the applicant's salary for the current academic year, what financial support their home institution and other sources are likely to provide, and what support they are likely to need from the Tikvah Project on Jewish Thought.
Princeton University is an equal employment opportunity, affirmative action employee.
